Marcus Samuelsson 10-Piece Stainless Steel Cookware Set Review

Marcus Samuelsson 10-Piece Stainless Steel Cookware Set
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased the 10-piece stainless steel cookware set and a 10" open stock skillet about one month ago. My wife and I have been very pleased with this cookware. Our previous cookware was Calphalon Commercial Hard Anodized, made in Toledo, Ohio. We were very pleased with the Calphalon cookware. In fact we have given those pots and pans to our sons for their own kitchens. However, I wanted to switch to multi-ply stainless steel cookware for some time. Our previous hard anodized aluminum cookware responded very quickly to changes in temperatures. However, my wife and I have found that multi-ply stainless steel heats up and cools down slightly slower than hard anodized aluminum. In fact these multi-ply pans retain heat more like cast iron. Following the directions to use medium heat settings has given us very good results. Soaking in water and using Bar Keepers Friend stainless steel cleaner has made clean up very easy.
It was very important for me to purchase cookware made in the U.S.A. or to be more accurate, I wanted to avoid "Made in China" cookware. I'm not opposed to Chinese cookware. I just have found, in my research, that current Chinese made cookware lacks consistent quality control. I considered All-Clad stainless steel, however the price was prohibitively high. When I discovered Marcus cookware made in U.S.A. by Regal Ware, I was excited that the price was easier on the wallet. I had some questions about this cookware and sent emails to Regal Ware. Chris Robason, National Sales Manager for Regal Ware, answered each of my emails very promptly. He assured me that Marcus Cookware, including the lids, were made in West Bend, Wisconsin. Also, he informed me that Regal Ware is going to add open stock pieces to the Marcus/Unity line of cookware. The Regal Ware website already shows a new 12" saute pan has been added to this line of cookware.
The Marcus/Unity cookware is very high quality. The stainless steel, aluminum tri-ply construction heats evenly, is very sturdy, and has good, balanced weight. The brushed, stainless steel handles are very comfortable. I really like the helper handles on the sauce pans. The lids fit very well and have enough weight to sit firmly on the pans. Also, knowing that Regal Ware is going to add more pieces of cookware to the Marcus/Unity line shows their commitment to providing quality, reasonably priced, American made products. The only improvement I would recommend, is to add a rolled edge to the pans for easier pouring.
**Update** The Marcus Cookware by Regal Ware has been replaced by American Kitchen Tri-Ply by Regal Ware. I was informed by Regal Ware, that the new American Kitchen Tri-Ply cookware is identical to the Marcus Cookware. I noticed on the Regal Ware website that a 12" / 30cm Covered Sauté Pan, a 3 QT / 2.8L Covered Every Day Pan, and a 3 QT / 2.8L Steamer insert has been added to the new American Kitchen Tri-Ply collection. I also noticed that the 2 QT / 1.9L Covered Sauce Pan no longer has a helper handle that was on the Marcus cookware version of this pan. In my opinion, the lack of a helper handle isn't really necessary on this small pan.

All-Clad Stainless 12-Quart Tall Stock Pot with Lid Review

All-Clad Stainless 12-Quart Tall Stock Pot with Lid
Average Reviews:

I have never felt more skeptical about buying a product so expensive but when I saw there was a used item selling for $240 by Warehouse Deals, my jaw dropped and I snagged it. I felt like the luckiest man in the world.
All-Clad doesn't disappoint with its reputation for quality: this pot simmers stock to perfection, looks beautiful, and will last many lifetimes. I only thought it would be taller, despite its title as a "tall" stock pot: I measured and found it to be slightly wider than it is tall. I was expecting it to be taller than it was wide, but this was never the case with all 12 quart stockpots I bought and measured.
Don't fear All-Clad's prices. Their products are meant to last lifetimes. Also, look for Warehouse Deals selling used pieces of cookware that were never touched. Most people won't be as lucky as me finding 40% off of a product like this, but stay on your toes nonetheless.

This pot is definitely solid and commercial grade, but the finish is lacking. Yes it is stainless steel, but the interior was hardly what I would call a polished finish. There are still groves from the machining, which I hope doesn't make this pot difficult to clean. Note in the photo the polished finish at the top, don't expect yours to look like this!

Anolon 16-Quart Stainless Steel Covered Stockpot Review

Anolon 16-Quart Stainless Steel Covered Stockpot
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
A very well built 16 qt stock pot. Solid cast stainless steel handles. Thick clad aluminium pad extend to the edge of the bottom for proper heat distribution. Body material is thick, not as thick as some of the $300 stock pots, but sturdy enough for any use. Top lip of pot has rolled edge making it stiffer to resist distortion from heavy use. The thick lid is well made to withstand heavy use. I gave it the twist test with my hands, but did not budge it a bit. It is nothing like a good pot with a distorted flimsy lid that would not fit properly. The best of all is the price, for $48, plus free shipping, and the promotional discount, it cost me $39 dollars. Didn't bring out my sheet stock micrometer to measure it against my All Clad 12 qt stock pot, but for that price I doubted I can find better.
It is made in China and by the quality of hollow cast stainless steel handles, the squareness of the lid and pot forming, the exterior polishing work, and the large rivets installation I woud think that it is made by one of China's heavy industrial manufacturing factory, the quailty comparable to any famous brand costing many times more.
10/17/05 An update after I have the chance to use this stockpot. Getting to love this stockpot more each time I use it in a different way. I compared this stockpot with my All Clad Copper Core 8 quart stockpot in my slow cooking needs, and this pot won hands down. The one thing that I notice was when using low heat the water boiled with bubbles randomly on the whole bottom surface, while I can see a distinct ring of bubbles from the All Clad Copper Core bottom above the gas range. After placing the meat in I turned down the heat to a point that I did not see any steam coming out of the lid, but the content was still boiling inside. The soup level hardly went down any after 12 hours of simmering. Stewed 12 pounds of beef tendon in this pot with same excellent result, although I check it regularly at the beginning I did not find anything sticking to the bottom and didn't bother to disturb the stew for the rest of the 4 hours. I did not have the same luxury for my more expensive pot.
Dug up my material thickness gage and check the material, the heavy lid material is 1 mm thick and is the same as the All Clad, but heavier with the large cast stainless steel handle. The single layer stockpot body is 0.8 mm and the 5 layered All Clad Copper Core is 2 mm. The lid is a bit loose and I can slide it laterally about 3 mm, while the All Clad lid fit tight with no movement. My only disappointment is that I cannot use either of these pots on the induction range.

Every cook has a day when they need an oversized pot. Though you may not use it everyday, you'll be surprised how often you do use it. Whether you're celebrating crab season, cooking pasta for a crowd or making homemade stock from your Thanksgiving turkey, you'll appreciate the large capacity of this stockpot. The pot is made of stainless steel, a metal that will not react with food, and features a bottom layer of aluminum for even heating plus a stainless steel protector so that the base won't leave marks on your ceramic sink or countertop.

Cuisinart MultiClad Pro Stockpot Review

I got tired of burning my stocks with thin-walled junk pots and decided to do some research. This pot is a big improvement over the standard Cuisinart line of pots and pans and is on par with the better All-Clad pots and other high-end brands. The fit and finish on this unit is excellent and the lid fits like a glove. This is a true 3 layer walled pot... no welded discs to the bottom of the unit (like the bargain stock-pot in the All-Clad brand line-up). Compare the price of this pot with the 'real' 3-wall constructed pots and you'll see a 2-3x improvement in price. I've used this pot ~20 times since I purchased it (each time for multi-hour stock simmering) and it still looks like new. Highly recommended!

Calphalon Tri-Ply Stainless-Steel 8-Quart Stockpot with Glass Lid Review

Calphalon Tri-Ply Stainless-Steel 8-Quart Stockpot with Glass Lid
Average Reviews:

This is a great stockpot. I had "borrowed" my mother-in-law's 6qt Wolfgang Puck Tri-Ply for several years and finally decided to return it. After using her tri-ply for so long, I knew I didn't want to go back to any other material. I was nervous about not finding one in my price range (AllClad for example is way too much for my modest income). When I saw this on Amazon for such a great price, I was concerened that the 8qt would be too big for my little kitchen. Since I couldn't find anything comparable, I went ahead and ordered it. When it arrived I was pleasantly surprised that it isn't much bigger than the 6qt Wolfgang.
The glass lid is fun because I can watch my stuff cook without lifting the lid. The handles stick out enough so that I don't burn my knuckels. They are also strategically placed to balance the weight, empty or full. I didn't notice that on the Wolfgang model.
In anycase, I have fried bits of meat on the bottom and then added liquid for soups and sauces. I have added cold stuff to hot and not had a problem with loosing heat.
This is a sturdy pot. The stainless steel is thick and it easy is to clean. It heats quickly when your hungry and can simmer sauce for hours without complaining.
If you are looking for a stockpot (especially for spaghetti sauce), go with the Calphalon - you can saute tomatoes on the bottom without any concerns.

The pot's tempered glass domed lid reinforced with a stainless-steel rim allows for monitoring food at a glance, while its ergonomic Cool V handles offer a safe, comfortable grip during stovetop cooking. The pot is oven- and broiler-safe up to 700 degrees F, and the lid can withstand temperatures up to 450 degrees F. Dishwashers safely clean the cookware, but over time can dull surfaces; hand washing is the best option to preserve the polished shine. All-Clad 3707-I D Stainless Steel Pasta Colander Insert Review

All-Clad 3707-I D Stainless Steel Pasta Colander Insert
Average Reviews:

All-Clad's usual high quality and performance is missed with this highly disappointing colander insert. I have attempted to cook numerous pastas at varying temperatures and been frustrated every time. The water either boils over (regardless of water level in the pot) or just doesn't simmer. Ordinarily I'd blame my incompetence, but attempts by friends and family to better my performance with the pot returned similar results. I thoroughly enjoy cooking with the rest of my All-Clad collection, but have relegated the colander to the basement cupboard and pulled out the old, but reliable Reverware.

With its flat base and tall, straight sides, this 6-quart stockpot works well when cooking recipes that serve four or less, whether boiling water for pasta, blanching vegetables, preparing stock, or simmering soups and stews. The versatile pot, which measures approximately 9 by 12 by 10 inches, makes a useful addition to any cookware collection. As part of Le Creuset's Enamel-on-Steel line, the pot features heavy-gauge carbon steel construction for fast heating and even heat distribution (no hot spots), along with a hard, glossy porcelain-enamel finish for both durability and eye-catching beauty on the stovetop. A stainless-steel rim around the top edge of the pot helps prevent chipping and cracking. Even more, its nonreactive interior resists flavor absorption and staining and cleans up in a snap. The cookware's loop side handles ensure a secure grip when lifting or transporting, and its tight-fitting domed lid with a stay-cool knob traps heat, moisture, and nutrients when cooking. The stockpot can be safely used on all stovetops, including induction, and should be hand washed only with hot soapy water and dried thoroughly.

Have had magnalite for about 20 years. I also own all types of All Clad stainless. For some reason, when it comes to cooking big pots of stews, chicken and dumplings, and chili, I always get out the 14 quart magnalite. I hope they have not changed the quality as the over review states. The roaster is also fantastic. I could never fry eggs or chicken in the fry pans however, they seem to want to stick. I always had very good luck with receipes that have a good amount of liquid called for and will always use them for fudge because the bottom is heavy, and roasters because the roast comes out super. I have to have my magnalite lined up by my all clad!!!!

Emeril Stainless Steel 8-Quart Tall Stock Pot with Lid Review

Emeril Stainless Steel 8-Quart Tall Stock Pot with Lid
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased a 14 piece Emeril Stainless set in 2008, and I have been very happy with it. The fit, finish and especially the base design were all up to the demands of my GE Profile ceramic cooktop, which had mercilessly warped all pans that came before the Emeril set. At the time, the Emeril Stainless was an excellent alternative to spending megabucks on All Clad.
I recently purchased this 8 qt tall stock pot. When it arrived, I was disappointed to see that a number of changes have been made in the product. The handle, lid and base design have all been modified, and in each case, the appearance, heft and quality have been reduced. Most alarming is the changes in the base. The weight and thickness of the base has been reduced significantly (30-40%). There is no getting around the fact that mass of the base matters. It affects the distribution of heat in the pan, and how resilient the pan will be to abuse.
It might be one thing if this was my first piece of Emeril Stainless. Unfortuanley, I have seen what the product was two years ago and I am dissappointed.

Cuisinart Chef's Classic Stainless Steel 4-Piece 12-Quart Pasta/Steamer Set Review

Cuisinart Chef's Classic Stainless Steel 4-Piece 12-Quart Pasta/Steamer Set
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this to replace an older smaller pasta cooker. I have about 20 pieces of the Cuisinart Multiclad Pro cookware but couldn't justify spending over $100 for a large stockpot. The only notable difference is that the Multiclad has the sandwiched aluminum all the way up the sides of the pot. Not really necessary I thought for something I would use mostly for boiling water. Besides, the heat source is only really from below and that extra multiclad surface only adds to the weight.
I love the shiney exterior and the large capacity compared to my previous pasta pot. The steamer insert is a nice little extra but I'm not sure I'd want to haul out this enormous pot just to steam a few veggies. The lid is more domed than Cuisinart's standard lids and has a more sculpted handle. Cleanup is easy but only if you have a very large sink. The handles on both the pot and insert are solid and appear to be very securely attached.
So what's not to like?
This pot was a lot bigger than I anticipated. So large in fact that it doesn't fit in my normal cookware drawer. I ended up having to divide the pot from the insert just so it would fit in the cabinets. And that domed lid just adds to the height. The insert didn't need to stick out of the pot as far as it does and the handles on the insert come out further than those on the pot itself. Where the pot will barely fit, the insert won't just because of the handles. The other problem with the height of this pot comes when you try to use it on your stove. I nearly have to stick my head under the fan hood to see inside it!
The inside of both the pasta insert and the steamer basket won't drain completely. There are no drain holes along the bottom outer edges so the water continues to drip after removing it from the pot whenever it's tilted. I'm also not sure why they made the outsides of the insert and steam basket so shiny but made the insides brushed. This is almost the opposite of their fry pans. A shiny smooth inside would have made cleanup easier without the use of Teflon.
It would have received 5 stars except for these minor issues.
